Expert summary
Christianity is a religion which developed out of first century AD Judaism. Its name comes from Jesus of Nazareth whose followers considered him the Christ (or Messiah) who would save the Jewish people. Christianity now has many different denominations and outgrowths. The three major divisions within Christianity are Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. Most beliefs are based on the teachings of Jesus and his apostles as found in the New Testament. The core beliefs include the idea that Christ was both God and man and that he was crucified and rose from the dead for the salvation of the world.
